Leading telecoms company, Airtel Malawi, has donated books worth K2.5 million to the pupils of Nalanda Primary School, in Chiradzulu district aimed at improving education in the country.

In a function which took place on Thursday, Airtel Malawi Corporate Social Responsibility Manager Norah Chavula, said the gesture was an empowerment platform aimed at developing education in Malawi.
Chavula said Airtel is passionate about education and remains committed to supporting disadvantaged and underprivileged children in Malawi.
She said, “Airtel Malawi is passionate about Primary education just as we are committed to the development of disadvantaged and underprivileged children. Our gesture underscores our commitment to offering practical relief, succour, hope and opportunities to children. We believe that quality education offers a gateway to a better life, as it is an empowerment platform that cannot be overemphasized.”
Chavula said Airtel is humbled to be walking the talk of empowering the education sector and stressed that this initiative was nominated and voted for by Airtel Malawi staff members.
She said an Airtel staff powered corporate social responsibility initiative is done for each region, every 4 months.
“We believe this donation will go a long way in improving the quality of education in the country, especially in Chiradzulu district.And it is my hope that these books will empower you to reach the greatest levels of your potential,” she said.
She added that at Airtel they believe that an educated society rises from institutions that have adequate resources, more especially books.
She said everybody cannot talk of development if there is no education before appealing to pupils and teachers to Nalanda primary to take a leading role in taking care of the books donated.
On his part, the School Head Teacher, Austin Gwaza , commended Airtel for coming to relieve the community members of some responsibilities to the children.
He explained that the school is growing everyday with population of pupils who want to school there because of the good gesture they enjoy from Airtel.
Gwaza said: “I have to give all the glory to God because when you start something you must take it to the end and with God everything is possible. We just want to say thank you to Airtel because they have relieved us and what we want them to know is that God will continue to bless Airtel .they have done so well,” said Gwaza.
Gwaza said their school which has 1171 pupils will benefit a lot from the books since most of the pupils cannot afford to buy books on their own.
This donation is not the first one for Airtel Malawi, as recently they donated a collective total of 220 desks to Salima LEA School, Lunjika secondary school in Mzimba.
Last year they also donated secondary school learner’s books to Chiradzulu CDSS, and they also handed over two newly constructed school blocks to one of their adopted schools Salima LEA.
The company also adopted a second school, Masenjere primary school in Nsanje and further donated 100 desks, stationery plus a borehole.
